Scanning replaces typing an item code or searching a list, which is faster and avoids picking the wrong item. Most retail goods carry a 13-digit code on the single unit.
The outer carton usually carries a different code from the single piece, so one item can have several barcodes. Each needs to be tied to the unit it is printed on, or a scanned carton is counted as one piece.
The common mistake is letting the same barcode sit on two items after a product change, so a scan lands on the wrong one.
