The step that turns a document or journal from a draft into a permanent record in the ledger, after which it is corrected only by another entry.
In plain words
Until a document is posted it can be changed freely; once posted it moves stock, balances and the ledger. Posting is the line between work in progress and the books, so it is where the checks belong.
At posting, the system checks that the date falls in an open period, the journal balances and the document is complete, then writes the journal lines. A posted entry is reversed, not edited.
The common mistake is leaving documents in draft for weeks. The ledger then misses sales or bills that already happened, and month end becomes a rush to post the backlog.
