Base unit

In Arabic الوحدة الأساسية

The base unit is the unit in which an item’s stock is held and valued, usually the smallest one it is sold in, with every other unit converted to it.

In plain words

An item may be bought by the pallet, stored by the carton and sold by the piece. If each of those were kept as its own balance, nobody could say how much is on hand. Holding stock in one base unit gives a single figure that every document converts into and out of.

The base unit is usually the smallest unit the item is ever traded in, so every other unit is a whole number of it: a carton of 24 pieces, a pallet of 40 cartons. Unit cost, counts and stock reports are then all read in that unit.

The common mistake is choosing a base unit larger than the smallest sale, such as the carton when shops buy single pieces. Every loose sale becomes a fraction, rounding creeps into stock and cost, and the books never quite match the shelf. A second mistake is changing it after stock has moved.

In Axon Suite

How Axon Suite handles it

Each item in Axon Suite holds and values its stock in one base unit, with its own conversions to every other unit it is traded in. Once stock has moved or conversions exist, the base unit can’t change.

Feature

Buy by the carton, sell by the piece

Each item keeps its stock in one base unit and has its own conversions to every other unit it is traded in. A line in cartons lands in stock as pieces, and the numbers always agree.
