When a credit limit doubles or a user suddenly becomes an administrator, someone will ask who did it. An audit trail answers without guesswork. It also deters misuse, because people know their changes are recorded under their own name.
A good trail is written in the same save as the change, so one cannot exist without the other, and nobody can edit or delete it. Each entry holds the user, the time, the record and its values before and after.
The common mistake is a trail nobody can read. Logging every field of every save into a table no screen shows is as useless as logging nothing. Make the trail searchable, and make sure the right people can open it.
In Axon Suite
In Axon Suite every record shows who created it and who changed it last. Changes to users, roles, permissions and document numbering are logged with who, when, from which address, and the record before and after.
