In Arabic الطلب المؤجل
A backorder is the part of a customer order that cannot be filled from stock now and waits to be supplied when new stock arrives.
When stock runs short, the choice is to refuse the line, ship what you have, or keep the rest waiting. A backorder is the waiting part: the customer still wants it, and you have promised to send it once stock comes in.
Backorders are normally filled in the order they were placed, oldest first, so the queue is the same for every customer. Expected receipts from suppliers tell sales roughly when each one will be filled.
The common mistakes are losing track of backorders altogether, or giving new stock to whoever calls loudest. Both leave loyal customers waiting longest.
