A lot, or batch, groups units that share a production run. Recording the lot on receipt, and on every movement after it, lets you see which customers received which batch.
That matters most on a recall or a quality complaint. With lots, you contact the customers who bought the affected batch and quarantine what is left. Without them, you recall everything.
The common mistake is recording the lot on receipt but not on the sale, which breaks the trail at the very point it is needed.
In Axon Suite
An item can be tracked by lot or serial in Axon Suite. A new lot must state its expiry date on the receipt, and a lot named again with a different expiry from the one on file is refused.
Lot-tracked items carry their expiry and manufacture dates from the day they arrive. When a line names no lot, Axon Suite takes the soonest-expiring stock in the bin, so nobody has to remember which pallet is short-dated.
