Not every address is worth delivering to. A service area draws the line: inside it you deliver, outside it you do not. It also lets each zone carry its own delivery fee and the people responsible for it.
Areas are usually drawn as shapes on a map rather than as lists of districts, because streets and districts rarely follow a clean boundary. Each order is then checked against the shapes to see which area, if any, it falls in.
The common mistake is taking orders first and checking the address later. A customer who has already paid for something you cannot deliver costs a refund and some goodwill.
In Axon Suite
In Axon Suite each service area is drawn on a map with its price list, warehouse, delivery fee and reps, and checkout accepts only addresses inside an active area and adds the fee.
Each service area is a shape on the map with its own price list, the warehouse it ships from, an optional delivery fee and the reps who cover it. The customer app takes orders only from addresses inside an active area.
