A stock reservation is a hold placed on a quantity of stock for a specific order, so the same goods cannot be promised or sold to another customer.
On-hand stock tells you what is on the shelf; it does not tell you what is still free to sell. A reservation marks part of it as promised. What is left after reservations, the available quantity, is what the next order can count on.
Reservations are usually placed when an order is confirmed and released when the goods ship or the order is cancelled. When stock is short, the order that cannot be covered waits as a backorder, often filled in date order as new stock arrives.
The common mistake is reserving and never releasing. Cancelled or stale orders keep holding stock, the shelf is full, and the system says nothing is available. A hold should end with its order, not linger after it.

In Axon Suite saving a sales order holds stock for each line in its warehouse. A line that cannot be covered waits as a backorder, and cancelling the order frees what it held.
Saving an order holds stock for each line in its warehouse. A line the warehouse cannot cover waits as a backorder, and when stock comes in it goes to the oldest waiting order first, not to whoever asks loudest.
