A unit price is the price of a single unit of an item, such as one piece or one carton, which multiplied by the quantity gives the line amount.
The unit price is the figure every line total is built from. It is not always the list price: it may come from a customer’s own price list, a quantity break or an authorised override, and it is what the customer is actually charged for each unit.
Because items are sold in more than one unit, each unit needs its own price. A carton of 12 is rarely priced at exactly twelve pieces, so the unit price is set per unit of measure rather than worked out from the piece price.
The common mistake is quoting a unit price without the unit. A price of 9.00 means one thing per piece and another per carton, and the mismatch shows only when the invoice reaches the customer.
In Axon Suite
In Axon Suite a price list holds a price per item and unit of measure, so a carton and a piece of the same item carry separate prices, each with its own quantity breaks.
Build sales and purchase price lists in their own currency, with or without VAT in the price, valid between two dates. Give a customer or vendor a list of their own or let them trade on your default, and price each item by unit with lower prices from a quantity up.
