Order fulfilment is the work of turning a confirmed order into delivered goods: reserving the stock, then picking, packing and shipping it to the customer.
Fulfilment is where a promise becomes a delivery. A distributor can sell well and still lose customers if orders arrive late, short or wrong, so the speed and accuracy of fulfilment are as visible to the customer as the price.
It usually runs in four steps: stock is reserved for the order, picked from its bins, packed and shipped. When stock is short, the rest waits as a backorder and goes out when goods arrive. A partial shipment is one way of fulfilling an order, not the whole of it.
The common mistake is confirming orders without reserving stock. Two orders then count on the same cartons, and the second customer learns about the shortage only when the truck arrives without them.
In Axon Suite
In Axon Suite saving an order holds its stock, a shipment sends the lines and quantities that are ready, and the order shows as partially shipped until the rest has gone.
A shipment opens from the order with everything still to go, and you send the lines and quantities that are ready. The order shows as partially shipped, each invoice is drawn from goods that have left, and the order closes itself once it is shipped and billed in full.
